Momentum

One of my 80/20 rules about ideas is that I struggle less with creating them
Than I do with executing them.

Generally, ideas come in fast,
Building excitement as I try to understand
Where they fit, what they solve,
Or if they mean anything at all.
Momentum builds quickly.
But as time passes… resistance sets in.

Sometimes it’s logistical.
Days go by, energy drains,
Barriers appear at work or home.
Things take second fiddle in the orchestra of life.

Other times, it’s internal.
Doubts creep in, second-guessing,
Something shinier shows up to replace it,
And, as Mitch Hedberg once said,
“I convince myself that what I thought of, ain’t funny.”
Even my brain tries to sabotage me, grilling me on
“Where are you going with this?
Are you sure this even matters…” and so on.
[And here I thought we were friends.]

It’s not easy, but I’ve had to acknowledge resistance,
Accept it, and sit with it.
I’ve tracked patterns, everything from
How much sleep I got to how my self-perception is.
[For a while, it was a serious list].

The more I documented, the more I realized the best answer was
To have fun with it.
I don’t mean that I enjoy the resistance,
But instead I work around it, through it,
And realize the hardest audience to impress is the one typing this.

So before the hill gets too steep,
I try to go easy on myself,
And save more of those ideas that would have normally slipped away.
